The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is seeking a full-time Project Officer for its Coal to Clean Initiative. The position will be based in Beijing, China.

For two decades, the Natural Resources Defense Council has been a thought leader and trusted adviser to our partners in China. With a highly effective team of more than 40 based in our Beijing office, we have worked hard at both the national and local levels to recommend, develop, and help implement innovative laws, policies, technologies, and market tools that curb pollution and accelerate China’s transition to a clean, low-carbon economy. NRDC's Beijing Representative Office is registered under the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and supervised by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration of China.
We are looking for a well-rounded professional with solid technical and policy analysis capability, strong relationship-building and project management skills. As an integral member of NRDC’s China Clean Power project team, the Project Officer will be responsible for developing sustainable energy efficiency and demand side resource solutions to support China’s carbon peaking and long-term carbon neutrality efforts.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to partner with NRDC’s staff of lawyers, scientists, and policy advocates and analysts, scientists and lawyers who protect the environment and public health through advocacy, action, and education.
Conduct research on standards, policies, and financial and market mechanisms for expediting the uptake of clean energy solutions in China.
Identify and analyze, in collaboration with partners as applicable, demand side and energy efficiency technology solutions and resource potential, industry landscape and business models, and work with project team to develop and advocate for recommendations for reducing power and industrial sector carbon emissions.
Work with project team to develop and manage research projects as applicable, including working with partners to prepare research proposals, budgets and contracts, monitoring progress and managing project to timely and high quality completion with a successful outcome.
Develop project case studies and write technical and/or policy summaries and briefs, and develop and/or give presentations at conferences, meetings and workshops as needed.
Keep up-to-date on the latest developments in energy transition in China and internationally and their relevance for power sector decarbonization.
Promote knowledge sharing and exchange both internally and externally, including sharing and supporting localization of international best practices, with NRDC's local partners.
Contribute to NRDC’s climate and clean power strategy, support team to implement and monitor progress, and meet project compliance and reporting requirements.
Work collaboratively with team members and partners to create a culture of team work, high performance and accountability.
Master’s degree or above. Engineering degree preferred.
Three or more years relevant work experience in energy management, sustainability and/or environmental fields.
Strong quantitative and analytic capabilities and the ability to conduct in-depth research and data and policy analyses.
Knowledge of China’s clean energy and demand side resource (DSR) policies, as well as the industrial and building sectors and related energy efficiency technologies, practices and standards.
Strong understanding of the design, development and implementation of energy efficiency and DSR programs and projects, including technical, financial and economic analyses.
Ability to work with diverse groups from a wide array of backgrounds and levels of business knowledge.
Ability to work independently as well as with cross-functional teams.
Fluency in English and Chinese, with excellent oral and written skills as well as bilingual translation ability.
Attention to details a must.
