Practice and Prospects of Green Consumer Credit in China: Findings and Recommendations

2020-01

China's economy is undergoing a transition from export and investment-driven to consumption-driven. In recent years, China's consumer finance industry has rapidly developed, fueled by favorable policies and thriving e-commerce. Green consumer loans can encourage consumers to choose green products – including green mortgages, EVs and other green products - and incentivize enterprises to produce and supply more green products and services. This practice plays an important role in supporting China’s low-carbon transition and sustainable development.

As part of the efforts to promote climate finance for commercial banks, the NRDC cooperated with CIB Research to produce the report "Practice and Prospects of Green Consumer Credit in China: Findings and Recommendations". This report reviewed the consumer finance market, defined and classified green consumer loans, and analyzed domestic and international cases of green consumer credit solutions. This study also provides recommendations for further promoting green consumer loans from both policy and market perspectives.
