Research on Mainstreaming Nature-based Solutions into China’s Climate Policies

2022-09

Surging global challenges are pushing the world near the tipping point of collapse. Climate change and biodiversity loss, are the most severe challenges we face, and the two interlinked crises must be tackled simultaneously. By sequestering carbon, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and strengthening the stability of ecosystems, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are an effective approach to promoting synergies between global climate and biodiversity crises.

In tackling climate change, NbS refers to actions that increase carbon sinks, reduce GHG emissions from Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU), and improve climate resilience through protection, restoration, and sustainable management of ecosystems, thereby effectively mitigating and increasing adaptation potential to climate change while providing benefits to human well-being and biodiversity.

NRDC cooperated with the Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning (CAEP) to conduct a policy study on “Mainstreaming Nature-based Solutions into China’s Climate Policies.” The study aims to promote synergetic governance between climate change and biodiversity in China’s policy system through situation analysis, comprehensive policy analysis, critical gap identification, and policy recommendations, to ultimately boost the country’s contributions to global climate change mitigation and adaptation and biodiversity protection.

In order to enhance the feasibility of the research findings and to make them a practical contribution to policy-making, we consulted a wide range of stakeholders during the research, including government agencies, research institutes, etc.
