20 years of Progress in Environmental Public Interest Litigation

Environmental public interest litigation (EPIL) has emerged as a key tool for Chinese NGOs to enforce existing environmental regulations. NRDC has worked with Chinese partners for years to empower them in EPIL through building legal capacity and introducing international experience and lessons learned. In 2016, we compiled typical EPIL cases highlighting the key elements of environmental law and enforcement in the United States. Our partner, Friends of Nature, recently released a progress review of Chinese EPIL from 1995 to 2015 to visualize the key aspects of EPIL development including legislation, NGO' s standing, case statistics, and major challenges. NRDC has been supporting this progress from the very beginning.
