NRDC Supports CITES Implementation and Enforcement to Protect Endangered Species

2017-03-29

NRDC was the only international NGO representative invited by CITES Management Authority of China to attend a CITES implementation and enforcement meeting on March 29, 2017, with Chinese government agencies and John E. Scanlon, the CITES Secretary-General. Government officials from relevant ministries, including State Forestry Administration and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as researchers and conservation experts, participated in the meeting. NRDC’s invitation to this meeting reflected its unique contribution to support China’s recent efforts to enforce the CITES framework to protect endangered species. Leveraging its international policy and science expertise on policy, NRDC has been working collaboratively with local key stakeholders to support the CITES-led National Inter-Agency CITES Enforcement Taskforce in China. During his visit to China, Mr. Scanlon was excited to learn about the China’s progress in CITES implementation and enforcement efforts as well as China’s recent restrictions on the domestic ivory trade.
