Supports China’s Wildlife Forensics Capacity Building

2017-05-12

NRDC facilitated a successful Chinese law enforcement and forensic delegation visit to the wildlife forensics lab of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from May 8 to 12, 2017. The lab is a world leader in offering a comprehensive range of in-house wildlife forensic services. The delegation and the lab's forensic specialists shared experiences and techniques for examining evidence and discussed opportunities for future cooperation. In order to prosecute and punish violators of wildlife laws, scientific analysis of evidence needs to be provided to prosecutors and judges. With increased demand for forensic analysis, China is working actively to enhance its wildlife forensics capacity. NRDC helped to initiate the communications between China’s wildlife forensics labs and their U.S. counterparts, generating the first formal cooperation in this area with endorsements from both governments. The Chinese delegation expressed strong interest in future cooperation with the lab to enhance forensic capacity through personnel exchange, joint research, training, and development of China’s own forensic standards.
