Capitalizing on National Energy Conservation Week to Promote Cooling Efficiency

2019-06-19

Small shifts in consumer behavior possess considerable potential to curb China’s electricity consumption, given that a third of the world’s air conditioning units exist within the country. NRDC capitalized on China’s National Energy Conservation Week (July 17-23) to draw consumer attention to best practices in efficient cooling: We coordinated the development of an online education game (“Energy Conservation Monopoly”) for the National Energy Conservation Center (NECC). The game received 2.2 million site visits during its one-week run on NECC’s platform. We also reinforced the importance of using air conditioners smartly, by compiling and disseminating “10 Common Air Conditioner Mistakes to Avoid on Hot Summer Days” through the NECC and other partner organizations. Finally, NRDC convened a “Green is Cool” workshop on June 19, bringing together representatives from government agencies, NGOs, and research institutes to exchange best practices in promoting responsible consumer behavior. At the event, NRDC and 12 other NGOs issued a joint statement committing to advance China’s recently released National Green and High Efficiency Cooling Action Plan.
