China Coal Cap Project Raises Awareness on the Need to Cap Coal

2014-11-21

On November 17 and 18, 2014, the China Coal Cap Project successfully hosted the International Workshop on Coal Consumption Cap and Energy Transition, which convened over 450 participants. Workshop speakers and participants, including Chinese and international research partners, industry associations, experts, NGOs, media representatives, and central and local government officials, discussed the initial research results and emphasized the importance of peaking coal consumption by 2020 or earlier. The project is finalizing its first year research reports and has held more than half a dozen press conferences to present key findings. This research will be included in a main report that is scheduled for release in February 2015, which will detail the environmental, public health, and sustainable development benefits of establishing a national coal cap policy in the next Five Year Plan and provide a roadmap for implementing the coal consumption cap.
