Supporting the International Conference on Fishery Innovation and Sciences

2019-09-25

NRDC co-hosted first International Conference on Fishery Innovation and Sciences with Chinese Academy of Fisheries Sciences (CAFS) and other partners on September 24th- 25th in Shanghai. Representatives and experts from United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Bureau of Fisheries (BoF) under Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA), University of British Columbia (UBC), University of Washington and CAFS discussed the current science, technology and practices to rebuild thriving fish stocks and healthy marine ecosystems. NRDC invited UBC Professor Tony Pitcher, the founding director of UBC’s Fisheries Center, to give a presentation on ecosystem-based fisheries management. The participants shared cases and policy updates on wild capture, aquaculture and stock enhancement. The participants agreed that aquatic biodiversity is key to fishery resource both in fresh and marine waters. Protecting aquatic species and their habitat can help revive the ocean, protect aquatic biodiversity and promote healthy and sustainable fishery development.
