2021-05-16

China’s commitment to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) is a significant step to addressing climate change. On May 16, Zhang Jieqing, NRDC China Program Director, was invited to deliver a keynote speech on the Montreal Protocol Kigali Amendment at a Green Finance and Cooling Efficiency workshop, which is hosted by Tsinghua University Research Center for Green Finance Development and the Industrial Bank of China. Ma Jun, Chairman of the China Green Finance Committee, and Ye Yanfei, Senior Inspectorate Advisor from the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission also spoke at the event. Representatives from financial authorities, financial institutions, and leading cooling companies attended the workshop. Jieqing emphasized that if the Kigali Amendment can be strictly implemented, about 0.5 °C global warming could be avoided. She also stressed that a large amount of investment and financial support is needed for alternative refrigerants, technology innovations, production line upgrades, and employee training. NRDC will continue to work with partners to promote cooling efficiency in China and to explore its financial solutions.
