NRDC's Sustainable Cities team developed the first China Walkability Index to raise awareness about the importance of walkability for low-carbon cities. By mid-July 2013, our team evaluated eighteen Chinese cities and conducted field investigations to verify the evaluation results. On August 21, 2013, NRDC held an expert consultation meeting in Beijing. Four urban planning experts, including leading walkability scholar Mao Qizhi of Tsinghua University and officials from China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MoHURD), gave very positive feedback and constructive suggestions on how the project could move forward in the future.
