Report: Enabling Renewable Energy Scale-up in Northwest China

2022-08-23

China’s Northwest region is a major hub and exporter of renewable energy, which now comprises 42% of the region’s installed generation capacity and 21% of generation volume. The increasing shares of renewable energy have also increased the region’s system integration challenges. NRDC has been working with our partners on developing market mechanisms to support Northwest China’s renewable energy scale-up since 2019. To further disseminate the research findings and promote experience sharing, we held a symposium on Enabling High Renewable Energy Penetration in Northwest China on August 23, where we released a summary report of  key findings from our past research. The report, Market Mechanisms for Expediting Renewable Energy Development in Northwest China, calls for constructing a comprehensive and multi-tiered provincial, regional, and national power market system to support renewable energy integration in Northwest China. Experts from think tank, power planning institute and local power company shared their insights and recommendations, including optimizing resource allocation through the power market. The expert views and the report findings were disseminated by major Chinese media, including Xinhua Finance, China Industry News and China Power News
