China leads the world in electric vehicle (EV) ownership with more than eight million EVs, where EV sales in 2022 are expected to hit a record six million. China also leads the world in renewable energy development with more than a third of global wind and solar energy installed capacity. Massive transportation electrification combined with large scale intermittent renewable energy may pose risks to power system operation but could also open the door to synergistic decarbonization of the transportation and power sector through well-managed vehicle-grid integration (VGI). NRDC and China EV100 hosted the first High-Level Vehicle-Grid Integration Roundtable, on August 25, to serve as a dialogue mechanism to bridge the two sectors. The roundtable members from grid companies, OEMs, power trading centers, and others discussed the challenges of EV charging interconnection protocols, the potential of EV’s participation in the ancillary services market and related business models, and necessary supporting policies. The roundtable members’ opinions will be summarized into articles and shared via industry WeChat accounts to raise public awareness of VGI and promote consensus building in the industry.
