Recognizing that an advanced energy storage system is a key enabler of large scale renewable energy utilization, NRDC and the China Energy Research Society organized a thematic salon to promote consensus building regarding energy storage development in China among experts from industry associations and think tanks. The salon participants pointed out that the sustainable development of energy storage requires reasonable market mechanisms and a market environment, and called for the development of a functional market for energy storage. The policy experts also advocated for strengthening top-level energy planning to coordinate the construction of renewable energy projects, transmission projects, and energy storage facilities in accordance with regional resource endowments to avoid overinvestment.
